Who really won the WW2 jet race? It's complicated...
The Gloster Meteor was the first British Jet aircraft to enter squadron service. It was the culmination of Allied efforts to win a top-secret race that lasted the entire Second World War - the race for speed. As soldiers fought on battlefields across the world, British and German engineers went head-to-head in battle to build an engine that would change aerial warfare forever.
In this episode of Duxford in Depth, IWM Project curator Robert Rumble dives into the history of the jet engine. Who led the British and German effort? What challenges did they overcome? And who really won the jet race?
*Note* - The engine diagram shown at 4:33 is an axial flow turboshaft engine, not a turbojet engine.

Why Japan lost the Battle of Midway
Переглядів 404 тис.14 днів тому
Has the balance of power ever changed so much in so little time than at the Battle of Midway? In the space of just 5 minutes, American dive bombers scored hits on three Japanese aircraft carriers, dramatically turning the tide of the war in the Pacific. But this pivotal moment was a product of more than chance. It was the culmination of decisions made not only in the heat of battle but in the p...

In 1943, the Allies began one of the most controversial epsiodes of the Second World War - The Italian Campaign. While the British claimed that Italy was the 'soft underbelly' of Europe, it turned out to be a 'tough old gut'. From the sunny shores of Sicily to the barren peaks of the Gustav Line, Allied soldiers faced dogged German and Italian resistance as they edged their way up the Italian P...

Who actually won The Battle of Jutland?
Переглядів 83 тис.2 місяці тому
The most important naval action seen during the First World War was, of course, the Battle of Jutland. The date was the 31st May 1916. A trap had been set by the Germans. Just off the coast of Jutland in Denmark, the largest nautical battle of the First World War was about to take place. The battle, involving 100,000 men and 250 ships, would last close to 2 days. But who threw the first punch? ...

The Balfour Declaration was signed in 1917. It set out British support for the creation of a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine. But when the Balfour declaration was signed the British had already promised Palestine to Arabs as an independent state and promised the French government that it would be an internationally administered zone - and even then, most of the land was still under ...

The Falkland Islands have two names. To the people who live there and to Britain they are the Falkland Islands but to their closest neighbour across the sea Argentina and its people, they are Las Islas Malvinas. The debate over what to call the islands is a symbol of a much larger dispute which has raged for hundreds of years and continues to this day. On the Argentinian side a claim based on t...

Hiding in plain sight: Photo-mapping Nazi Germany

Looks can be deceiving. It may not be apparent, on first inspection of this civilian aircraft, that this was one of Britain's first spy planes. In the years before the Second World War, this aircraft would have gone relatively unnoticed in the skies of Europe. The Lockheed Electra was a perfect camera platform. It could be fitted with cameras in the cabin and in the leading edge of the wing. An...

If you mentioned BMW to most people, they think of a car. They don't think of something with an engine of 1,800 horsepower powering one of the deadliest fighters of the Second World War. The Focke-Wulf 190. Kurt Tank's design of the Focke-Wulf 190 was hunched like a pitbull. Very strong in design. Tapered wing edges. It could roll very fast. It could take a lot of punishment. And the performanc...

There were a few reasons that people liked the P-47. One was, Like the B-17, The P-47 It was an extremely durable aircraft and could take an unbelievable amount of punishment. Another was, You could about mow a road through the forest with those machine guns. It had over a ton of horse power, And when combined with the paddle prop, It was an extremely effective air frame.

The only reason videos like this are needed is because they don't teach history in schools anymore. _But you can sure learn 'social issues' like the number of genders and how America is a horrible 'colonial county' that's always been racist!_

Interesting point made by an Argentine about the sinking of the Belgrano cruiser, it is the Belgrano captain who defends the actions of the captain of HMS Conqueror, the nuclear submarine to sink Belgrano. The Belgrano captain publicly stated, "I would have done the same".

One MINOR point missed is that the 262 engine according to Wicky had a life of 34 minutes, with another 15 minutes after inspection. I'm 77 and there is a refurbished English engine running older than me. They don't make them like they used to.

Eric Brown flew both the Meteor and the 262. He considered the 262 the superior aircraft as it lacked the meteors problem of directional snaking, meaning the 262 was a more stable gun platform. Adolf Galland also came to the same conclusion, and said the ideal fighter would have been the 262 with British engines.

British struggled with jet designs. The rule with jets it is the better they look the better they fly. All the british jets look like tractors but they to this day try to prop them up to be something other.

At dinner time I stood on the embankment watching these guys in amzement then with my flags stretched out and on seeing a plane coming towards me I began to wave my flags above my head then stretched my arms out and simulated dipping the wings and every pilot that flew over dipped their wings just to say hello back, it felt good knowing these guys are doing a very important job but still being human and communicating back...

Good video! I crewed F4E&G for my first 8 years of service, it was a hard aircraft to work and demanded blood, sweat and tears every day and night, but once I knew her I was her master and my jet did things and flew like crazy! I even got a ride in my F4E 740663 before moving to tankers. I went Mach 2.3 and pulled 7.5 +Gs and 4 negative went inverted an did a bunch of barrel rolls and all kinds of tricks over the Mohave Desert it was a kick in the ass!! Have great pictures!! What a jet!!
